A Singular Sensation

The fourth annual Steps for Survival raised $28, 312 for The Leslie Simon Breast Care Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center with an amazing party held at the Alpine Country Club in Demarest, New Jersey.

The top-notch evening included music, a lavish buffet and inspiring speakers who spoke of the good work of the center and what it means to patients and their families. WABC news anchor Lori Stokes presented the proceeds to President and CEO Douglas A. Duchak. The highlight of the evening was an extraordinary showcase of beautiful swimwear designed by Phoenix 365 for women who have had mastectomies.

Actual patients modeled the ensembles.Steps for Survival is sponsored by the offices of plastic surgeon Dr. Richard D'Amico and oncologists Drs. Forte, Schleider, Attas & Condemi. Staff members Audrey Fey and Diane Trezza came up with the idea for the joint effort in 2006.

History of the Event

If anyone had told Audrey Fey and Diane Trezza two years ago that their shared wish to help breast cancer patients would take a giant leap forward, they might have looked surprised.

But that is exactly what happened, when their dream awoke to make “Steps for Survival” an increasingly successful fundraising event benefiting The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

It began quietly in 2005 when Audrey, a medical aesthetician for reconstructive surgeon Richard D’Amico, MD, and Diane, a nursing coordinator for the oncology group of Drs. Forte, Schleider, Attas, Morrison and Condemi, shared ideas about ways they could further support the breast cancer patients they and their colleagues cared for.

“This event has taken on a life of its own,” said Audrey, the event’s founder and original organizer. “That’s because Steps for Survival is so much more than a fundraising event. It’s truly an extended family, joining together the hearts and hands of our patients and their loved ones, our community, our Medical Center staff, and the many people with whom we work who volunteer to make this event the success that it is.”
