Englewood Hospital Celebrates Humanism in Patient Care

Four hundred elegantly attired and smiling guests celebrated the fifth anniversary of The Russell and Angelica Berrie Center for Humanistic Care and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center’s commitment to humanism on May 8 at the Medical Center’s annual Black Tie Gala.

More than $500,000 was raised. “It is the caring nature of people such as our Gala supporters who make the success of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center possible,” said Douglas A. Duchak, president and CEO of the Medical Center. “On behalf of the Medical Center’s extended family, especially our patients, I thank them all.”

The intriguing Pier 60 in New York City set the tone with romantic, spectacular views of the Hudson River as record-breaking winds sculpted the water into mysterious shapes. Guests enjoyed a gourmet cocktail reception with dozens of exceptional offerings and live jazz under the direction of internationally acclaimed guitarist Roni Ben-Hur. A most well-received concert emceed by popular commentator and broadcaster Steve Adubato followed. Sweet Georgia Brown, the “Last of the Red Hot Mamas,” and The Blues Crusaders and Davell Crawford, “The Piano Prince of New Orleans,” headlined the bill.

Wendy Oxenhorn, from the Jazz Foundation of America, took the stage to play the harmonica in tribute to the hospital’s humanitarian medical program for uninsured jazz musicians. An unexpected “musical moment” occurred when Margaret C. Bridge, executive vice president for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Foundation, joined Georgia in a brief but remarkable duet on stage. A high-spirited auction of Chianti, Italy, a giclée of an original painting by legendary crooner Tony Bennett, who donated the artwork, went to Michele Bridge, Margaret’s daughter, for the high bid of $1,200.

The gala is a signature event of the Foundation. “With each year, the gala gains increasing importance as the ties between the Medical Center and the community grow even stronger and more meaningful,” said Margaret C. Bridge, “The generosity of our giving community is reflected in the way it supports Englewood. Thank you! You can be sure each gift makes a difference.”

Drs. Sandra and Arnold Gold were recognized for their inspiring leadership in the field of humanism in patient care at this year's annual Black Tie Gala to benefit Englewood Hospital.
