The Maxwell Shaw Series at Englewood Hospital
During an illness, the human connection with professional caregivers can have a tremendous impact on a patient. To allow nurses and other caregivers to deliver more compassionate healthcare, they need a time and place to discuss their experiences, thoughts and feelings.
As part of an overall emphasis at Englewood Hospital, the Maxwell Shaw Series will allow caregivers from multiple disciplines to talk about cases that were challenging for emotional, social and personal reasons. Guided by a physician facilitator, this will provide a unique forum for clinical staff to explore and process the non-medical dimensions of patient care – the joys and the sorrows, the moments of transcendence and the stresses of the daily grind.
All gifts to The Maxwell Shaw series are fully tax-deductible and can be sent to the EHMC Foundation, 350 Engle Street, Englewood, NJ 07631.

Maxwell Shaw, A Man of Principle
Max could be best described as a man of principle, a man who enjoyed the finer aspects of life, and above all else, a man of accomplishment through his ability to take matters into his own hands. Through his discipline, sharpness, and organized mentality, Max was able to make the most of his time on this Earth. He traveled the world, had a promising career, and loving family and friends. Even at his worst, when he was facing the harsh realities of cancer, he continued to be as stalwart as ever, never showing fear or complaining about his health. Towards the end of his days, he was limited to only drinking select liquids. For Max, opening up the fridge was like going to the shopping mall, and at end of every trip he would always choose his favorite, Ginger Ale. Ginger Ale was Max’s remedy. With little left to physically enjoy, taking sips of Ginger Ale gave him a feeling of refreshment, a feeling of “ahh” which we are all so used to, a feeling of what it means to be alive. What Ginger Ale meant for Max was priceless. Although we may all have different goals in life, Max has showed us to appreciate the journey, which is as simple as enjoying a can of Ginger Ale.
